Early in the a.m. Friday, December 11, 2009, over 250 volunteers, station representatives, guests and program staff filled the banquet room of the Leon County Civic Center for the annual Senior Companion/Foster Grandparent Volunteer luncheon. This year’s theme was “Hands that serve, Hearts that Care!” When you think of volunteers you think of people giving their time and talents. The Rickards High School JROTC under the direction of Sgt. Major Pat Brown presented the colors; Jim Croteau, ECS President and CEO gave opening remarks; and Ben Brown, SVP Advisory Council President, gave the welcome.
This was the Senior Companion Programs’ (SCP) 35th anniversary and a special part of the program was dedicated to those volunteers. Mr. James McMichael who was instrumental in starting the program in Leon County gave a brief history. Thelma Anderson Rittman, SC volunteer, talked about the value of the program. Staff and advisory members acted out a skit to commemorate this anniversary, spelling out the word SC with each letter representing a characteristics we believe our volunteers have. All SC volunteers received a commemorative lapel pin.
Mr. Ernest Sneed was recognized for 20 years of service as a Senior Companion. Mr. Sneed, who still acts like a teenager although he’s 89 years old, serves in Jefferson County. His program coordinator, Deborah Latson, gave a heartfelt speech on their personal and professional relationship while trying to hold back tears of joy.
Mr. Sneed is a former US Marine and through his volunteer work gives tirelessly of himself. All attendees received a biogroaphy of Mr. Sneed’s accomplishments and accolades. He was given a beautiful glass plaque and a monetary gift. His motto is, “I always try to do my best for people.”
Pamela Cooper and Ivy Nixson, ECS Volunteer Coordinators, presented the Braddock-Parker Award. This award has been given since 1995 and is presented to special SC volunteers selected for their dedication and service to the program. This year two volunteers were recipients of this award. Larry Pate has served for 14 years and currently volunteers at the Elder Day Stay. Catherine Thomas has served for 16 years and is currently at Big Bend Hospice. Both were recognized by their supervisors, Susan Warren (EDS) and Travia Cohen (BBH) who conveyed how much they appreciated and valued these volunteers.
Fifteen, ten and five year volunteers were also recognized during the luncheon and given gifts for reaching these milestones.
